Welcome to the Broken Bay Institute (BBI)

BBI is the largest provider of Catholic distance theological degrees in Australia. We draw from over 25 years experience in providing theological education in distance mode. Our students come from all walks of life, from the cities and rural regions of all the States and Territories of Australia, throughout New Zealand and the Asia Pacific Region, to Africa, Europe, and North and South America.

While BBI was established to assist with the local needs of the people of the Diocese of Broken Bay, our vision is truly global and mission oriented. BBI understands that isolation, busy lives, and personal circumstances make it difficult or impossible for people to access regular face-to-face classes. We were established with the mission to enable people access to quality theological education.

BBI provides a theological education that recognises the intimate connection between spirituality, theology and life, and acknowledges that adults learn over the continuum of their life's journey.

As well as having over 100 course units available in distance mode, covering awards from undergraduate to postgraduate levels, students can also access our optional seminars through our Summer, Easter, Winter and Spring Schools. These are great opportunities to meet BBI faculty and staff and fellow students, as well as visit the fabulous city of Sydney!

Whether you are interested in studying Theology, Christian Spirituality, Liturgy, Biblical Studies, Youth Ministry or formation for ministries and leadership, you will find a multitude of learning and formation opportunities that will deepen your knowledge of our Catholic heritage and prepare you for service in the church and world.
