Award Programs of the Sydney College of Divinity

The Broken Bay Institute (BBI) is a Member Institute of the Sydney College of Divinity (SCD). The SCD is a registered Higher Education Provider. Students who study through BBI undertake fully accredited Sydney College of Divinity Award Courses at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. All degree programs are approved by the Australian Council of Tertiary Awards and the New South Wales Ministry of Education, and are taught by BBI as a Member Institute of the SCD.

Australian students are eligible to apply for Austudy or FEE-HELP (a Commonwealth Government student loan program).

The range of award courses now on offer through BBI includes:

This pre-degree award is built around core studies in Biblical Studies, Theology and other approved units from within the Bachelor of Theology program (ten units).

[expand/collapse icon]Bachelor of Theology

This is the primary and comprehensive award in Theology at the undergraduate level, and the normal entry into higher theological degrees. Course units are offered in the areas of Biblical Studies, Christian Ethics, Christian Spirituality, Church History, Humanities, Liturgy, Pastoral Theology and Practice, Philosophy and Theology (24 units). Students may exit the Bachelor of Theology program with a Diploma of Theology provided they have met the requirements of that award.

[expand/collapse icon]Bachelor of Theology (Honours)

This preparatory research degree of one-year (or part-time equivalent) is available to approved BTh graduates. It consists of three course units and a significant supervised research component. This award can provide a stepping stone to research in Theology or a theologically related discipline at the highest level.

This graduate course is designed for students who hold a three-year bachelor award in any discipline but have done no previous study in Theology and Scripture. It comprises four course units (two core and two electives).

[expand/collapse icon]Graduate Diploma in Arts

This graduate course is designed for students who hold a three-year bachelor award in any discipline but have done no previous study in Theology and Scripture. It comprises eight course units (four core and four electives). Students are able to select units to develop a specialisation in one of the following fields: Biblical Studies, Christian Spirituality, Pastoral Practice, Theology. Students enrolled in the Graduate Diploma may exit the program with a Graduate Certificate in Theological Studies provided they have met the requirements of the award.

This graduate course is designed for students who hold a three-year bachelor award in any discipline but have done no previous study in Theology and Scripture. It comprises twelve course units (six core and six electives). Students are able to select units to develop a specialisation in one of the following fields: Biblical Studies, Christian Spirituality, Pastoral Practice, Theology. Students enrolled in the MA degree may exit with one of the following awards - Graduate Certificate in Theological Studies or Graduate Diploma of Arts provided they have met the requirements of those awards.

The Master of Arts (Hons) is available by thesis alone. It provides the opportunity for candidates to embark on a significant piece of research which investigates a theological or related topic in a systematic and comprehensive manner that is not available in course work programs.

[expand/collapse icon]Master of Divinity

This is the primary and comprehensive award in Theology at the graduate level, and is essentially a more rigorous version of the three-year full-time undergraduate BTh. As such it has a structure of majors and sub-majors, together with a 12,000 word essay which counts as two of the total 24 units. On completion of the MDiv, students will be eligible to undertake a research degree such as the MTh (Hons). Students enrolled in the MDiv degree may exit with one of the following awards - Graduate Certificate in Theological Studies, Graduate Diploma of Arts, Master of Arts - provided they have met the requirements of those awards.

The Master of Theology degree consists of twelve course units (four of which may be at 500 level in certain circumstances), to be studied at 600-700 level, two of which may be in a form of a Research Essay (10,000 - 12,000 words).

The Master of Theology (Hons) provides students with the opportunity to pursue advanced study in theological disciplines by research. It is designed for those who seek to further their study of Theology for academic, vocational, professional and/or personal reasons. This award also offers training for further research at doctoral level.

The Doctor of Ministry is a higher award by research and coursework (four units). The award aims to provide the opportunity for professional development in ministry at the highest academic level and thereby to enable candidates, through a period of systematic reflection on the practice of ministry, to make a distinct contribution to the profession of ministry, by a creative and academically informed investigation of some aspect of that profession.

The Doctor of Theology is a higher award by research. The award aims to provide opportunity for research in Theology at the highest academic level and thereby to enable candidates, through a period of systematic theological reflection, to make a distinct contribution to knowledge, either by the discovery of new facts, or the exercise of independent critical power.

The Doctor of Philosophy is a higher award by research. The award aims to provide opportunity for specialised research at the highest academic level and thereby to enable candidates, through a period of systematic research and reflection, to make a distinct contribution to knowledge, either by the discovery of new facts, or the exercise of independent critical power.
