Assessment
Assessment of student performance in any course unit is continuous or progressive and is only finally determined when results are reviewed. The grade for that unit is based on the total marks gained. Assessment tasks conform to the general guidelines determined by the SCD. Assessment requirements are provided at the beginning of every course unit. Tutors may ask a student to re-present written work which is unsatisfactory in content, language or presentation.
Assignments are to be presented in typed double-spaced format. The Registrar may waive this demand in special circumstances.
Each student is to keep a copy of all written work submitted for assessment; a student may be required to present a duplicate copy on request from a tutor or the Registrar. Students are to post their assessments to the Registry or email them to assignments@bbi.catholic.edu.au When emailing assignments, students are responsible for ensuring that their work is sent in a format compatible with BBI system. Students are not to forward assignments to tutors.
Students should keep graded assignments for the duration of their program.
Grading is awarded as follows:
| H | High Distinction (85%-100%) |
| D | Distinction (75%-84%) |
| C | Credit (65%-74%) |
| P | Pass (50%-64%) |
| N | Fail (below 50%) |
| E | Extension granted |
| X | Extra Work where, in the judgment of the Tutor, additional work and/or assessment must be undertaken and completed successfully within a set time. On completion, a grading of P (Pass) only may be gained. Failure to complete this task satisfactorily results in the grading of N (Fail) being recorded. |
| W | Withdrawal |
The result of N (Fail) is liable to be recorded where a student fails to submit written work on the due date without an extension, or fails to submit it by the date granted by the extension.
When a result of W (Withdrawal) is recorded, such a result is not to be regarded as any form of academic credit, nor does it prejudice the student’s academic record. In all other instances, failure to complete a course unit results in the grade of N (Fail).
Should a student receive a fail mark, the grade of N is not given until a second assessor has given a report. Second assessors are to read all failed papers and all written work which has contributed to the result. They are to furnish a written report to the tutor and the Principal. In cases of disagreement, the Principal takes the final decision; if the Principal is also the tutor, the matter is referred to the Academic Board of Studies for decision. In order to preserve uniformity of standards within BBI, the Academic Board of Studies considers all results and recommends the final grade.
If, in the opinion of the Principal of BBI, a student’s academic progress is not considered satisfactory, the student is required to show cause why he/she should not be excluded from BBI.
Academic misconduct refers to students using work which is not their own, which they have not done themselves. BBI adheres to the academic misconduct policy of the SCD.
