Extensions, Deferrals & Withdrawls
Assignment extensions
Assignment due dates can be extended for up to one week upon application to the Registry Office. A further extension may be granted upon written application to the Registry Officer. This longer extension is more likely to be granted if accompanied by relevant documentation (e.g. a doctor’s certificate). Failure to request an extension on or before the assignment due dates will result in an “N” (fail) being recorded against late assignments. A student will need to apply in writing to the BBI academic committee to have this result reviewed.
Extension of unit completion
In situations where a student cannot complete more than one assignment for a particular unit by the due dates the student needs to apply for a unit extension. In serious circumstances only, a student may be granted an extension of unit completion of up to six weeks. A unit extension is normally granted only once in a twelve month period. The Registry Officer has the discretion to vary the length and period in which an extension is granted.
Award candidature deferral or leave of absence
May be granted for serious reasons and students must apply on the appropriate form. Students may apply for an award candidature deferral in situations where they are not in a position to study over a given academic period. Applying for a deferral allows the student’s candidature to be extended, thus reducing the risk of candidature lapsing before all the award requirements have been met. Deferrals will be presented to the relevant SCD committee, and will not together exceed two semesters (four terms) during the period of award candidature.
Withdrawals
A student may withdraw from a course unit without academic or financial penalty only if notice of withdrawal is submitted in writing to the Academic Dean by the census date. After that time no refunds will be given and students will be awarded W (withdrawn) or N (fail).
