Library Manager

BBI - The Australian Institute of Theological Education (BBI-TAITE) is one of the largest Catholic providers of online theological education in the Asia-Pacific region. Online delivery enables the Institute to reach students in a variety of locations, including remote areas across Australia and abroad.

BBI-TAITE offers postgraduate degree programs designed to support people working in the education, aged care, missions or aid sectors. It runs short courses for professional development, adult faith formation, eConferences with leading educators from around the world and an annual international speaker series of seminars with visiting professors. Its publishing arm, Vaughan Publishing is an imprint with Garratt Publishing, through which the highly regarded Mission & Education Series has been published.

With faith-based values, BBI-TAITE is a registered charity, operating under a company structure. It is located in Pennant Hills, NSW. BBI-TAITE operates as a Higher Education Provider. Current BBI degree students are enrolled with several partner universities.

BBI-TAITE's Board seeks to:

  • operate, maintain and promote BBI-TAITE, in accordance with the mission, beliefs, traditions of the Roman Catholic Church;
  • foster and promote excellence in teaching and scholarship, so as to further the goals of theological learning and encourage human flourishing; and
  • draw on the rich intellectual life of the Catholic and other faith traditions to deliver quality higher education in a student-centred, stimulating and inclusive environment.

Library Manager

The Library Manager manages the acquisition, cataloguing and circulation of BBI’s collection. A major responsibility is to work with lecturers to ensure that readings are available online for students.

As BBI-TAITE is an approved Higher Education Provider (HEP), the Librarian will manage BBI-TAITE’s subscription to electronic data bases, support lecturers to identify materials for inclusion in the LMS, and ensure that BBI-TAITE is compliant with copyright legislation in the use of those materials. The Library Manager also assists students accessing materials and provides a reference service for staff.



This role requires a well-developed knowledge of library and information management concepts, principles and theory, and well-developed skills in the application of library and information systems, collections and services.

Managing the Collection

  • Arrange for the purchase, accessioning, and cataloguing of new books and serials;
  • Ensure appropriate loan arrangements are in place for staff and students;
  • Develop the Library’s collection in printed, electronic, and other formats by coordinating acquisition processes;
  • Undertake original and copy cataloguing to provide access to new resources;
  • Apply international standards to cataloguing, classification and data management; and
  • Review and evaluate the library’s collection in consultation with Faculty, including a deselection process for material which is no longer required or is in poor condition.

Supporting academic programs

  • At the request of lecturers, identify appropriate materials to support learning objectives;
  • Identify materials for inclusion in the LMS;
  • Ensure that BBI-TAITE is compliant with copyright legislation for all material used for educational or other purposes;
  • Ensure that required readings are uploaded to the sites of partner universities;
  • Arrange for interlibrary loans; and
  • Develop and participate in cooperative networks to provide document delivery and to facilitate resource sharing.

Supporting students and staff

  • Source material to support staff and student research;
  • Assist students and staff locate correct or appropriate books or articles and undertake research; as to appropriate sources of information;
  • Train students in the use of on line data bases;
  • Prepare guides to support student use of electronic data bases; and
  • Prepare material promoting the library for inclusion on the BBI-TAITE website.


  • Manage the library budget and serials orders and arrangements for purchase of electronic data bases;
  • Recommend to the Academic Dean the purchase of new books, serials or data bases; and
  • Manage the relationship with vendors.


  • In consultation with Faculty, accession and catalogue donations.

Contribution to BBI-TAITE

  • Welcoming persons who visit BBI-TAITE;
  • Undertake research or identifying articles at the request of BBI-TAITE staff; and
  • Undertake other duties as required to support BBI-TAITE’s mission.

Skills and qualifications

As BBI-TAITE’s sole professional librarian, this is a role for a generalist with experience in all aspects of library work. The minimum requirements are:

  • A degree or recognised qualification in librarianship;
  • Eligibility for professional membership of the Australian Libraries and Information Association;
  • A minimum of 5 years’ experience in a special library or a library in an educational institution;
  • Expertise in the use of digital data bases;
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and professionally;
  • Demonstrated capacity to provide high level customer service; and
  • Demonstrated commitment to BBI-TAITE’s mission and values.
