Dr Michael (Mick) Ryan has had a long and varied involvement in Catholic education and schooling, including more than 20 years in teacher education. In teacher education he has lectured in research methods, educational assessment, mathematics and career development; he has held positions as principal lecturer and professional experience coordinator, and has been course coordinator for several programs including the Master of Teaching and Master of Education degrees in the School of Education NSW at Australian Catholic University. Mick has taught Mathematics and Religious Education to Higher School Certificate level and has held positions as Mathematics Coordinator and Deputy Principal in NSW secondary schools.


Dr Ryan’s current research interests include the role of Catholic mission and identity as informed by Catholic intellectual tradition and contemporary Catholic teaching – and its significance in informing educational practice in Catholic institutions. Mick is also interested in community engagement in the context of Catholic social teaching and as a dimension of quality education.

Dr Ryan’s previous research includes doctoral studies of sustained volunteering in community service organisations. Mick received the Beth Southwell Research Award 2015 for Outstanding Thesis from the NSW Institute for Educational Research (NSW IER). Mick also managed an ARC-Linkage Project which sought to enhance volunteer capacity for contextually diverse community organisations; this research involved a partnership between ACU and three community service organisations: the St Vincent de Paul Society, the NSW Rural Fire Service, and the Benevolent Society (2002-2006). Mick presented the keynote address to the ICCOREIS Forum 2009: Valuing Volunteers (August 2009). ICCOREIS is the Inter-Church Commission on Religious Education in Schools (NSW) Inc. and has 14 member churches.

Dr Ryan was vice chairman of the community-based committee which obtained Schools Commission funding to establish Gilroy College, a Catholic co-educational secondary school in Sydney’s Hills District; he was a founding member of the Gilroy College School Board.

Dr Ryan has held senior management positions in customer service, training and HR development, and has more than 15 years professional consulting experience across various industries including the public sector, banking and finance, telecommunications, manufacturing and defence.
