The Synodality of the Church: Theology and Practice

This seminar is proudly brought to you through the partnership between BBI-The Australian Institute of Theological Education (BBI-TAITE) and Saint Paul University, Ottawa, Canada (SPU).

In an effort to further the mission of our respective institutions, to inspire and encourage the People of God to contribute to the life of the Church, we have designed this seminar on the theology and practice of synodality, which Pope Francis calls a “constitutive element” of the Church.

This seminar will provide insights and a deeper understanding of the Church – its nature, its mission, its structures, and its worship.

This seminar will investigate in depth the repeated teachings of Pope Francis about synodality as a “constitutive element” of the Church.

Synodality is a term that succinctly focuses the theology of Vatican II which invites the entire People of God to journey together, to “accompany” each other, as we live as the Church. Since the entire Church is synodal in its essence and all its relationships, synodality must be experienced in all the various collaborative structures in each nation, diocese, and parish.
The seminar, therefore, will focus on “structures of synodality,” and it will identify various ways in which these structures would function with an increasingly synodal spirit.

Synodality also finds expression through the “full, conscious, and active participation” of the faithful in liturgical celebrations (Vatican Council II, Sacrosanctum concilium, n. 14). The seminar will examine this liturgical dynamic as a concrete and lived expression of synodality, found at the source and summit of ecclesial life and mission.
