Call for Papers and Workshops

To propose a paper presentation or a workshop exploring how women in the Church have “stood out” or amazed us and continue to do so in new spaces that are opened, new frameworks that are constructed, and in Churches which live a renewed calling as ‘discipleship of equals’. That is, as people engaged in ministry in various forms and equally valued.

The Emmaus journey (Luke 24:13-35) presents two disciples recalling to Jesus how certain women “stood out” from among them and were witnesses to his resurrection. At Vatican II, the Council explained: “At all times the Church carries the responsibility of reading the signs of the times and of interpreting them in the light of the Gospel” (Gaudium et Spes n.4). What are the signs of our times, in which women stand out from among us?

Suggested themes for discussion and topics for papers could be: power and participation; truth-telling and healing; vision and mission; a fairer place for women in the Church; shaping an ecclesial discourse on sexuality that is accessible and credible; turning the corner and taking the next step; and women as Gospel witnesses and community builders and/or makers.

Please include your name, academic or faith community, or other relevant affliation, paper or workshop title, and an abstract of 100-150 words related to the conference theme. When proposing a workshop please state its purpose and learning outcome. Acceptances will be advised by 1 March 2020. Selected papers will be published after peer review in a collection of essays arising from the event.
