Organisations in the Church: Organisational Perspectives

Unit overview and content

This unit will provide detailed analysis of the organisational structure of Church organisations, from an organisational or structural perspective.

Initial attention is given to the way in which an organisation goes through a process of structuring in response to the “rules” within which it exists, the available resources. In particular, it will consider the relationship between “meaning making” in Church organisations, the use of authority as a resource and the civil and canonical “rules”.

Students are given the opportunity to analyse a specific Church organisation through this framework, including:

  • Dioceses, diocesan agencies and parishes
  • Religious Institutes
  • Associations of the Faithful
  • Ministerial Juridic Persons and other ecclesial organisations
