The Bible and Popular Culture

Unit overview and content

This unit will examine the role of the Bible as a cultural resource in different media of popular culture. Using a selection of contemporary examples from film, music, television and art, students will analyse the interpretations of Biblical themes and texts and compare these with their own interpretation using the skills of contemporary critical exegesis. This unit will also analyse the importance of cultural context in Biblical interpretation and reflect the types of themes, metaphors and images from the Bible which recur throughout our own popular culture.

Study hours

10 hours per week for 12 week semester, comprised of:

  • At least one hour per week for online lectures.
  • At least three hours per week of reading.
  • At least six hours per week of directed study, including optional and assessable online activities.

Teaching methods

Online lectures; online activities; guided reading; scaffolded assessments; feedback on assessments.
