Mariology

Unit overview and content

In this unit students will enter into a scholarly study of the major doctrinal teachings about Mary, Mother of God. The unit will consider the major doctrinal claims in relation to all or some of five perspectives; Mary in the Biblical sources, early claims and tiles and Christology, Mary and the Church at Vatican II, Mary in the liturgical tradition and Mary in ecumenical expression and discussions. Students will engage with Scriptural, patristic and dogmatic sources to develop a critical theological understanding of the doctrines. Students will engage with contemporary questions in Mariology including ecumenical discussions on Mary following the Second Vatican Council.
