Vatican II: Theological Themes and Reception

Unit overview and content

This unit provides opportunities for students to develop knowledge and understanding of central theological themes which emerged during and after the Second Vatican Council as well as the theology of the reception of the Council. Students will engage with the primary source documents of the Council which may include the materials from the anteprepatory stage, Acta of the Council, and the constitutions, decrees and declarations of the Council. Students will engage with theological commentary on the Council and selected theological themes. The students will also consider the hermeneutics of reception. This study will be accomplished by the investigation of selected theological themes and the engagement of students with the relevant research literature, debates and as well as their own research on the theological themes.

Study hours

10 hours per week for 12 week semester, comprised of:

  • At least one hour per week for online lectures.
  • At least three hours per week of reading.
  • At least six hours per week of directed study, including optional and assessable online activities.

Teaching methods

Online lectures; online activities; guided reading; scaffolded assessments; feedback on assessments.
