Religion and Popular Culture in the 21st Century

Unit overview and content

This unit is designed to draw on students’ natural interest in contemporary popular culture and make the connection with religion’s role, real and potential, in that culture. The unit will explore a range of examples from popular culture, nationally and internationally, and analyse the role that religion plays or not, and reasons for the interface

Study hours

10 hours per week for 12 week semester, comprised of:

  • At least one hour per week for online lectures.
  • At least three hours per week of reading.
  • At least six hours per week of directed study, including optional and assessable online activities.

Teaching methods

Online lectures; online activities; guided reading; scaffolded assessments; feedback on assessments.
