Applications are now open for 10 University of Newcastle Theology scholarships.

Commemorating The Broken Bay Institute’s (BBI) tenth anniversary, the ten scholarships, worth $2500 each, are offered for 2013 by BBI, the University’s provider of theological academic course work.

On offer are two BBI Scholarship in Theology, which are open to the general public and eight Bishop David Walker Scholarships, for students living and working in the Broken Bay Diocese.

Theology student and mother of three Nadene Henderson, who was the recipient of two scholarships in 2012, knows just how much difference a scholarship makes to university study.

With three children under seven, the decision to leave the workforce and go back to university fulltime was a commitment that brought short-term sacrifices for her and her family.

Nadene began a Graduate Certificate in Theology and a Master of Primary Teaching in 2011, undertaking both part-time.

“I left a ten year career to go back to University and study to become a teacher,” Nadene said.

“As a Christian, my goal is to teach in the sector and so the Graduate Certificate in Theology was very important to me spiritually and in terms of enhancing my career prospects.

“It was a huge financial commitment for my family – going back to one income was difficult and we did not really know if it would work. Winning the Bishop David Walker and the BBI Theology Scholarship has made it so much easier.

“The program itself was great – most of it was online and the forums and coursework was challenging and stimulating.”

Students can apply online at www.newcastle.edu.au/scholarships. Applications close on March 31.
