In another recognition of his outstanding contribution to academic research, Professor Lovat was selected to present the 50th Annual Morpeth Lecture on 2 November at Christ Church Cathedral in Newcastle.

The annual lecture was established in 1967, in partnership between the University of Newcastle and the Anglican Diocese of Newcastle.

Professor Lovat spoke on an area which has been a strong focus for his research over recent decades in his topic, “Saving Islam from Jihadism: A Theological Analysis”. You can here the full lecture here.

The lecture explored the ease with which radical Islamist or Jihadist discourse has utilised Islamic sacred source material to promote its cause and how this approach has been based on a poor knowledge of Islamic sources. Professor Lovat also went on to explore how the radical Islamist discourse has undermined Islam’s credibility in the public eye based upon a fundamental misinterpretation of the sacred texts. In the Morpeth Lecture, Professor Lovat instead emphasised the positive message of Islam and the values it shares with other faiths, including Christianity.

Professor Lovat has made a remarkable contribution to research in this field including as Honorary Research Fellow at Oxford University in Britain, Visiting Professor at Yogyakarta University in Indonesia, as a guest at the Theology Faculty at the University of Tehran in Iran and as Adjunct Research Professor at the Royal Roads University in Canada.
