Academic Staff

Reverend Fr Matthew Muller is the Chancellor and Canonical Advisor in the Catholic Diocese of Maitland-Newcastle.

Born in Mudgee NSW his family moved to Newcastle in 1972 and he attended Marist Brothers Hamilton until 1976.

From 1976 he worked as an industrial chemist firstly at BHP and finally at Tomago Aluminium.

In 1985, Matthew Muller was accepted as a student for the priesthood and went to study at St Patrick’s College Manly.  During this time he completed a Bachelor of Theology (1989) and a Baccalaureate of Theology (1991).

In 1993, after pastoral placement, he was ordained a priest and was appointed assistant priest to Bishop’s House Maitland, followed by Muswellbrook in 1996, and then Parish Priest of Singleton 1998.  During this time, Fr Matthew completed a Master of Arts in Early Christianity and Jewish Studies (1999).  Additionally, in 2006  he was also made Parish Priest of Branxton.

Continuing his studies part-time, Fr Matthew completed an Advanced Diploma in Business Management in 2005 and a Master of Theology in 2008.  2009 saw his appointment to the six parishes of the Chisholm Region of the Diocese.  This appointment included a team of both paid staff and volunteers, with 12 churches and 14 Mass time slots on a Sunday.

In 2012, the Bishop of Maitland-Newcastle, the Most Reverend Bishop Bill Wright asked Fr Matthew to study canon law at St Paul University Ottawa where he completed graduate diplomas in Canon Law and Conflict Resolution, Canon Law and Ecclesiastical Management, a Licence in Canon Law and a Masters in Canon Law.

On his return to the Diocese of Maitland-Newcastle in 2015, Bishop Bill Wright appointed him Chancellor of the Diocese and Canonical Advisor. He is also the Parish Priest of the Parish of Mayfield and the Parish of Stockton.
