Bishop David Walker founded BBI – The Australian Institute of Theological Education and served as the second Bishop of the Broken Bay Diocese from 1996 to 2013 when the Holy Father, Pope Francis, accepted his resignation upon his 75th birthday.
Bishop David’s deep love and interest in spirituality formed the backbone to his commitment to promote a truly Australian spirituality, and the fostering of theological and spiritual education.
Almost 40 years ago, he established the Centre for Christian Spirituality, which evolved into The Broken Bay Institute, and was subsequently renamed to BBI – The Australian Institute of Theological Education, to provide new opportunities for theological distance education to people previously unable to access it.
A prominent speaker, Bishop David has published extensively on faith renewal, spirituality, mysticism, formation of clergy and Church leadership. Bishop David most recently served as Chair of the Australian Catholic Bishops Commission for Church Ministry and was a Member of the Bishops Commission for Health and Community Services.
He is a former member of the Ecumenical Commission of the Archdiocese of Sydney, the NSW Ecumenical Council, the Australian Catholic Theological Association, and the Committee for the Continuing Education of the Clergy. He was a Permanent Committee Member of the Australian Catholic Bishops Conference; a member of the Bishops Commission for Education; a member of the Bishops Commission for Mission and Faith Formation; and Chairperson of the Catholic Education Commission NSW.
